A classical Chinese painting receives digital treatment with 8K ultra HD technology and 4D motion imaging with 360-degree dome view. The immersive exhibition brings together historical research and technology in an interactive storytelling of life in ancient China.
“Along the River During the Qingming Festival” is an iconic painting of 11th century China. Attributed to the Song dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan (1085-1145), the 5.28m scroll captures the daily life of people and the landscape of the capital Bianjing (present-day Kaifeng, Henan province) during the Northern Song.
With the treasure currently housed in Beijing’s Palace Museum, the iconic work will make its way to Hong Kong in a digital presentation projected onto on a 5m high and 30m long screen. From 26 July to 25 Aug at the AsiaWorld-Expo, the masterpiece can be observed up close and in animation, with details of urban life revealing the political, economic, cultural and social phenomena of the time.
More than 20 painters over a 400-day period worked to translate the masterpiece into its digital and contemporary form. The exhibition will include a virtual boat ride down the Bian River Harbour and a three-dimensional presentation of the detailed features of the painting, which allows visitors to be part of an experimental landscape along a spatial narrative. In addition, there will be a 4D rendering of the scroll
Visitors to the exhibition “A Journey Through Springtime Along the River” will also find commissioned art installations, a reading area, as well as activities for families. Song Dynasty Park is an interactive zone for kids and adults to learn Song culture through fun and hand-so experiences such as fan drawing, new year paintings, and lantern riddles.
“We hope that this exhibition can give Hong Kong audiences a more sophisticated experience to better understand this classic Chinese painting,” said Raymond Fung Wing-kee, vice-chairman of Hong Kong Palace Museum. “This exhibition is not limited to the digital presentation of the painting itself as before, but extends to the social and cultural background of the commercial prosperity in the Northern Song Dynasty reflected in the painting. This will provide a broader perspective for audience to understands the development of Chinese civilization,” said Guan Qi, the Vice President of the Palace Museum Culture&Media Co., Ltd.
