Contemporary Art at a Glance: Art Central 2018

From March 27 to April 1, Art Central returns to Hong Kong’s Central Harbourfront with over 100 leading international galleries with 30 new galleries joining for the first time. In addition to the fair booths, the fair continues to expand its reach with a line up of programmes. Here are some programme highlights of this year.

Ying Kowk most recently curated the Hong Kong Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. For Art Central, she continues her curatorial focus on the 'boundaries of collaboration' between curators, artists and the wider community. The series of large-scale installations situated throughout this year's Fair address two important facets of contemporary art practice today: progressive mediums (technology, AR, Kinetic art) and historical cultural narratives.

Challenging the confines of the fair booth are cutting-edge works by Penelope Davis (Australia); Jun Ong (Malaysia); Yang Jung Uk (South Korea); Entang Wiharso (Indonesia); Andrea Wolf (Chile); Karolina Ziulkoski (Brazil); and ZHANG XIAODONG (China).

initial Fashion x Studio Nick Verstand

initial Fashion first joins Art Central as an official partner this year, presenting installation by Studio Nick Verstand. Nick is a contemporary artist investigating human behaviour and perception through spatial audiovisual compositions. His works invite interaction with the moving walls of laser light synchronised with the surrounding sound. The autonomous installations will certainly bring fair-goers an unusual and multi-sensory experience.

Dialogues with International Artists

Asia Society Hong Kong Center presents a daily programme of talks and panel discussions about art and society. Topics range from the effects of chaos and violence after war on a society and its artistic development, the complexities of text and language in visual arts, Queerness in Art, and performance art as activism in public spaces beyond the museum setting.
