Asian Art at Michaan's Auctions during Asia Week San Francisco

Asia Week San Francisco launches its second edition this Fall. From 29 September to 8 October, The Bay Area will see a superb line up of exhibitions, film screenings, symposium, and auction sales relating to the field of Asian art. Michaan's annual October auction brings a variety of categories, including Asian art from China and beyond.

Since Michaan's inception, Asian art has been a core business. The upcoming auction on 7 October holds new discoveries in the areas of carved wood treasures, devotional objects, furniture, porcelains, stuff bottles, and textiles. A special Preview at the houses's premises in Alameda, California, will be held on 6 October (Friday) at 12pm.

Highlights of the sale include the embellished panel of prized zitan wood from the late Qing dynasty, inlaid with carved images of China's most valued collectible art objects, known as the "hundred antiques" and including vases, censers, brush pots and many more.

Additional carved wood treasures are the Guanyin figure holding a small boy, and the naturalistically gnarled ruyi scepter both of boxwood and each estimated at USD$1,500-$2,000. Another exceptional rare wood lot is the pair of zitan curved-leg stands carved with swirling cloud motifs (USD$6,000-$7,000).

(Estimate: USDUSD$1,500-$2,000)

Fine famille rose painted porcelains include the hu-form vase with elephant head handles, dating to the 19th century (USD$1,000-$1,500) and the stately square-shaped Republic Period vase with scenes of scholars and ladies on all four sides (USD$4,000-$6,000).

(Estimate: USD$4,000-$6,000).

Chinese textiles have sold very well at Michaan's this year, and October's auction brings to market a gorgeous silk dragon robe (USD$3,000-$4,000) heavily embroidered with symbolic motifs on a deep blue ground.

(Estimate: USD$3,000-$4,000)

Snuff bottles of fine overlay glass, jade and turquoise are offered this month. Asian art from beyond China is also well represented. Highlights include the ornate Nepalese bronze figure of Manjusri (USD$3,000-$4,000) and the collection of three Japanese cloisonné enamel vases, signed "Goto" and estimated at USD$600-$800.
