Boon Hui Tan is gaining a new perspective on Asian art far from his native Singapore.
As Asia Society’s new vice president of global arts and cultural programs in New York, Tan, former assistant chief executive for museums and programs at Singapore’s National Heritage Board, appreciates the different vantage point.
“I spent most of my career doing cultural exchanges in Europe, with other places in Asia, so I’m very interested in this kind of working in different contexts across different environments,” says Tan, age 47, who moved to the U.S. in January.
It’s an essential perspective to have given Tan’s mandate to collaborate with arts institutions and artists globally to build a greater worldwide understanding about Asia. He’s also overseeing Asia Society Museum in New York, which this September will feature an exhibition of Zao Wou-Ki, a Chinese post-war abstract painter who trained in China and France.
Barron’s Asia chatted with Tan about Singapore, Asian art, New York and his plans for Asia Society in the society’s garden cafe.
