Discoveries from the Sinan Shipwreck: the Art Market in Hangzhou and the Antiques from the Song and Yuan Dynasties

OPENING TALK
In the summer of 1323, a Chinese cargo ship set sail from the port of present-day Ningbo. On its journey to Hakata, the ship encountered a storm off the west coast of Korea. First discovered fortuitously by a fisherman, the Sinan shipwreck is Korea’s largest underwater excavation and uncovered nearly 24,000 artefacts of everyday goods and luxury items bound for the Japanese market. Dr. Youngmi Kim, curator of the Asia Department at the National Museum of Korea, will discuss discoveries from a shipwreck whose precious cargo offers a look into maritime trade and cultural exchanges in East Asia, and the social function of art among Yuan nobility.
The evening lecture and the opening cocktail is the first of the Museum Lecture Series, co-presented by Asia Week Hong Kong and the Korean Culture Centre of the Korean Consulate, supported by the Korean Women’s Association of Hong Kong.

Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art
A very rare imperial amber-inlaid gilt-bronze 'dragon and twelve chilong' box and cover, 18th century
Exceptionally rare, the box and cover is an outstanding example of boxes made in
the Imperial Palace Workshop, the Zaobanchu, under the supervision of the Neiwufu Imperial Household Department, which was in charge of the management of provisions for the Court, which included making of items for the personal use of the emperor and his family. The present box is a testament to the superb craftsmanship and technical perfection achieved during the 18th century.
Rare Jewels and Jadeite
A Rare Sapphire and Diamond Ring, Circa 1980
The cushion-shaped sapphire, weighing 12.92 carats, within a marquise, baguette and brilliant-cut diamond surround (with diamonds approximately 3.50 carats total) was recently discovered in a family’s bank vault. Sapphires were first discovered in Kashmir around 1880 but most Kashmir mines rapidly depleted soon after. Termed as 'blue velvet' due to the superiority of their superb cornflower blue hue, most Kashmir sapphires that appear on the market today were discovered more than 100 years ago.

Bonhams Masterclass on Coloured Diamonds

The geological rarity of natural fancy coloured diamonds is owed to a number of factors. Guests have an opportunity to handle, preview, and discuss a selection of highlights from the forthcoming Rare Jewels and Jadeite auction with Graeme Thompson, Director of Jewellery, and Paul Redmayne, Head of Sale, Jewellery.
Of all the coloured diamonds, red is the rarest of all. Like pink diamonds, they are created through a process known scientifically as "Plastic Deformation". Such is their rarity that GIA (Gemological Institute of America) records show that from 1957 to1987, not one laboratory report was issued for a diamond with "red" as the only descriptive term. Today, only a handful of red diamonds are recovered every few years, with the majority weighing considerably less than 1 carat. One of this sale’s highlights is a rare fancy coloured diamond and diamond ring, the cushion-shaped fancy brownish red diamond, weighing 1.30 carats, between similarly cut diamond shoulders, ring size 5½.

Sotheby’s presents the mid-season sale of Scholarly Art from the Collection of Mr and Mrs Gerard Hawthorn. Known for his eclectic and expansive scopes of interest in Chinese Works of Art, Gerard Hawthorn had, over the years, amassed sizeable collections of bamboo, Yixing stoneware and bronzes. These are categories which have gained long overdue traction in comparison to their jade and ceramics counterparts, which have for the most part, embodied the canon of Chinese Works of Art collecting in the West in the past.
In tandem with this great collection is the Chinese Art Sale, which constitutes fine selections from several private Hong Kong collections, in particular, a selection of scholarly items from the Peony Collection. Presented through the joint efforts of students from the Department of Fine Arts of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Art of CUHK 2018 is a showcase of graduates’ artistic ideas and a celebration of the Department’s achievement in nurturing local art talents. The Silk Road and the Art of the Tibetan Plateau Forum — Pāla Art and its Influence in China 青藏高原絲路與藝術論壇 — 波羅藝術與中國
TWO-DAY FORUM
The Tibetan Plateau, an important and active area on the ancient Silk Road, has left a rich and varied cultural and artistic heritage in its more than two thousand years of history, and has been the subject of much global academic research. Taking art history, cultural relics and archaeological discoveries in the countries and regions of the Tibetan Plateau as its theme, and against a broader historical/cultural background and time span, The Silk Road and the Art of the Tibetan Plateau Forum will focus on the study of Buddhist relics, the artistic styles and archaeological discoveries in the core areas of the Silk Road such as the five Central Asian countries, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China and Nepal. The aim is to understand from the perspective of art history and archaeology, how the Silk Road, as an economic and cultural epicenter, affected the many Himalayan areas it encompassed in terms of multicultural and religious dissemination, migration of ethnic groups, commerce, and trade.

Chinese Furniture in Siheyuan: their placement, function and inherent social implications

Classical Chinese furniture has been collected avidly for several decades. It is shown as an object of art in museums throughout the world. However, seldom is it placed in a period house to show its usage, except as installations in museum exhibitions.
Oftentimes such installations are limited to a scholar's study, a bedroom and/ or a hall. The need for a comprehensive study on the interiors of a Chinese home has led to the publication of "Furnishing a Gracious Chinese Home" to explain the placement of furniture.
In the present talk, Philip Mak will guide the audience through the interior of various rooms with three-dimensional illustrations and explain its inherent social implications, in the siheyuan (四合院) during the Ming and Qing periods (14th-early 20th century).

Persianism and Domes of Medieval East Asia

MUSEUM LECTURE SERIES
Less celebrated today than their counterparts in the Roman and Byzantine West may well be the domes of ancient Iran. Featuring a distinctive structural device known as squinches, however, no less monumental domes did flourish in the Iranian world too, especially between the Parthian and Sasanian period. In fact, the domes that became so commonly adopted to the mosques around the world later on were derived of these earlier precedents. Besides, it is obvious that even before the advent of Islam, the ideas and forms of domes had reached Central and East Asia out of their Iranian heartland. The talk discusses such possible instances of domes in East Asia, and as a major case in point introduces the eight-century Silla Korean Buddhist sanctuary known as Sŏkkuram in Kyŏngju in connection to the Iranian and Central Asian prototypes.
Dr. Minku Kim is an assistant professor of art history at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, specializing China between the Han and Tang period (206 BCE-907 CE), particularly in relation to Buddhism.

Korean Traditional Dance : 舞(무) : 뭇다 (“mu(dance): mutda”)
PERFORMANCE
This performance showcases the beauty of Korean traditional dance. 舞(무) (pronounced as “mu”) means “dance”. “뭇다” (as “mutda”) is a Korean word that has a meaning of “making a harmonized combination by putting together smaller objects.
“舞(무):뭇다(mu: mutda)” is the first of the series on “Transmission and Creation”, introducing six stages of traditional dances. Each has its own distinctive colour, feature and characteristic, but all combined serve the fundamentals of Korean traditional dance throughout the history.

Guided tour of Antiques Galleries in Central

CHARITY HERITAGE WALK
Built at the founding of the colony in the mid-1800s, the second oldest street in Hong Kong takes its name from the woodland which once covered the area. On the Hollywood Road, foreign traders and merchants sold artefacts from mainland China before making their way towards Europe. At its height in the 1980s, the stretch of Hollywood Road was home to over 100 antique shops.
The charity walk to Central’s antiques galleries will include a visit to Teresa Coleman Fine Arts Ltd, established in Hong Kong in 1982. The gallery specialises in antique Chinese embroidered costumes and textiles, including wall hangings, embroidered curtains, collars, shoes, exquisitely carved and painted fans, and much more. The walk continues at Bonnie Lai Antiques, showcasing Tang Dynasty statues, as well as other high quality antiques from different dynasties. Every item has a certificate of authenticity. The visit concludes at KY Fine Arts, which has been dealing with Chinese ceramic antiques for several decades. They also have associations with many Chinese artists and calligraphers in China, Hong Kong and overseas.
This event is held to benefit select charity organisations supported by The Helena May.

T Project - A Taste of Youth

Liang Yi Talks: What Does a Conservator Do?

Liang Yi Museum is delighted to have Paul Harrison, renowned conservator, as speaker of our June edition of Liang Yi Talks. Paul will provide an overview of the role conservators play in the care, maintenance and conservation of artefacts in museum collections and explore the behind-the-scenes of a museum loan.
Paul Harrison holds a Bachelor's degree in Archaeological Conservation and a postgraduate degree in Archaeometallurgy from University College London. He is the owner of Phoenix Conservation, and has worked with local museums and collections for over 20 years. He is a fellow of the International Institute of Conservation.

How Valuable are Art Galleries, Dealers and Auction Houses in Building an Important Private Collection? Collectors Circle Panel Discussion
COLLECTORS CIRCLE PANEL DISCUSSION
The celebratory close of Asia Week Hong Kong is marked by the fourth edition of the Collectors Circle Panel Discussion and closing party. Held to support the Friends of the Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the annual event is an occasion to discuss pertinent topics surrounding engagement with art, the art market, and approaches to collecting.
This year’s theme centres on the role and value of art galleries, dealers, and auction houses in building an important private collection. In the case of contemporary art, does an art gallery have a conflict of interest in advising what makes an important collection? Does buying from a particular gallery or auction house significantly accredit value to an artwork? What unifies a collection and makes it ‘important’? Is it still a coherent collection if one buys across art categories? Is a coherent collection more desirable than individual art pieces?
Sagiri Dayal, Irene Fan, Michael Liu will illuminate this year’s Collectors Circle Panel Discussion, co-hosted by Asia Week Hong Kong and the Friends of the Art Museum, CUHK.
