NATIONAL MUSEUM OF KOREA

DR YOUNGMI KIM, SENIOR CURATOR ASIA DEPARTMENT

Discoveries from the Sinan Shipwreck:

the Art Market in Hangzhou and the Antiques

from the Song and Yuan Dynasties

Synopsis

In the summer of 1323, a Chinese cargo ship set sail from the port of present-day Ningbo. On its journey to Hakata, the ship encountered a storm off the west cost of Korea. First discovered fortuitously by a fisherman, the Sinan shipwreck is Korea’s largest underwater excavation and uncovered nearly 24,000 artifacts of everyday goods and luxury items bound for the Japanese market. Dr. Youngmi Kim, curator of the Asia Department at the National Museum of Korea will discuss discoveries from a shipwreck whose precious cargo offers a look into maritime trade and cultural exchanges in East Asia, and the social function of art among Yuan nobility.
