Held to support the Friends of the Art Museum, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the annual Collectors Circle Panel Discussion is an occasion to discuss pertinent topics surrounding engagement with art, the art market, and approaches to collecting.

This year’s theme centres on the role and value of art galleries, dealers, and auction houses in building an important private collection. In the case of contemporary art, does an art gallery have a conflict of interest in advising what makes an important collection? Does buying from a particular gallery or auction house significantly accredit value to an artwork? What unifies a collection and makes it ‘important’? Is it still a coherent collection if one buys across art categories? Is a coherent collection more desirable than individual art pieces?
